My mother told me this story about the war.We had been "bombed out" and were living on a London tube station at the time. I was born in 1942 and was just a few months old.My father worked for The Civil Defence as a Policeman attached to Bow Police station and was on the Mortuary Squad (picking up parts of bodies etc).
My mother was shopping one day when she met an old friend.I cant remember her name, but, I will call her Lill. Lill said that, her familly had decided to all move in together as it was "safety in numbers". But my mother remembered that she lived on a corner house."No!" My mother said,"move away! Its too dangerous!"
She never met Lill again until one day after the war had finished she met her, quite by chance in the street."Stop Stop!" she cried "I must thank you , you saved our lives,we decided to leave that night and go down to the Tube, all of us, my son, wife, my daughters, their families,16 of us all together and that night there was a direct hit on our corner house, thank you thank you so much!"
I never tired of hearing this story, as you can imagine Margaret Shipman
