On 28 June 1940 I, aged nine, was evacuated from Portsmouth to a village near Andover. This is what my hostess wrote to my parents:
"Dear Mr and Mrs Taylor, This is just a few lines to let your know your little daughter June is well and settling down very well, she was a wee bit homesick Fri., but they had had a long day and were all dead tired. Both my husband and I will do our best to make her happy while she is with us, and hope soon please God she will be able to come back to you both, you must miss her most terribly, you must come and see her when you are able to. I have a little boy 3 yrs , he can't quite make it all out, but he will soon get used to it. I was brought up at Portsmouth, and went to Stamshaw school, my father is a naval pensioned. He's an old Royal Yachtsman, and most of his friends live at Portsmouth, so really we do not seem strangers to each other. So please rest assured I will look after her, she has only 2 mins walk to school we are almost next door to it. Will close now as it is rather late. My husband is out on L.D.V.patrol tonight and will be home at 1.30 a.m. They have to do 10 p.m. till 1.30 a.m. and two more take over till 5 p.m. He registers next Saturday. Cheerio to you both, Yours truly, J. Sturgess.
