When war broke out I was living in the Docks area of Grimsby with my parents.By 1940 it was getting dangerous and there was a chance for children to be sent into the safety of the countryside. We were sent by ourselves on the bus each with our gas mask and suitcase. My Mum didn't know where we were going. When I arrived at welton-le-Marsh we were taken to a big school where we lined up and then the adults filed in for us to be billeted. I can even remember the clothes I was wearing at the time - A navy gabardine mac, a blue beret which my Mum had crocheted for me , white socks and black patent strapped shoes.-The children were picked and I was left behind until a lady approached me and said 'you're coming with me,,Joyce"This lady was called Maude Bush and her husband was called Ron but she asked me to call her Mrs Bush as she did not want to be too familiar.
Mrs Bush and her husband lived in a large cottage in Mill Lane in Welton-le-Marsh and I have happy memories of the countryside with the animals- I remember there being a pig - also there was no flush toilet- it was all very different from my life in Grimsby.
I stayed here for about two years and then Mum decided that she wanted me back as the situation was becoming dangerous.I boarded the train at Burgh-le-Marsh and cried all the way back to Grimsby where the situation had become worse.
One night after we been to the pictures to see Betty Grable in 'Moon over Miami' and I was safely tucked up in bed the next thing I knew was the sound of the air raid siren. A bomb dropped at the back of our house killing some of our neighbours but luckily we survived except that our house had been buried in the blast and all our possessions were lost. Until my father could find us somewhere else to live we were living temporarily at the school in Victoria St.
I soon became accustomed to my life back in Grimsby but I never forgot my other 'Mum', Mrs Bush and kept in touch with her until she died.
