This story has been added by 大象传媒 Radio Leeds on behalf of the contributor and has her permission. In 1939, she was 12 and lived in Saltaire. The sirens sounded for the salt mill. She waited for her mother who was walking home in the dark. The air warden came and told her there was a raid on. She hurried home and was sitting in a coal bunker playing cards. Three whistling bombs dropped in Heaton woods. She went to visit her auntie in 1943, walking home in the snow, as she heard a flying bomb. There was a droning noise, it stopped and you knew it was going to drop. Luckily it didn't come near us, but it was frightening not knowing.
