We had 16 bombs dropped near own home in Longnor.
We were told that they had probably been despatched after a raid on Coventry because they weighed so much and the planes needed to drop them conserve fuel to get back to Germany.
The Bomb Disposal came to blow one up nearest our home.
Mum was told to get my younger brother and me into the house whilst they exploded the bomb and that she should get her washing in and get us safely under the kitchen table.
My brother Ron was like all boys and thought he knew better and decided to watch the bomb explode from his bedroom window.
Mother soon put a stop to that and got us both under the kitchen table.
Later, and after the bomb had exploded, she took us to bed and a large piece of shrapnel had come through Ron's bedroom window and was sticking out of his bed.
I joked with him for years that his curiousity nearly was the death of him.
