I was 17 when war broke out. On Saturday nights my friend and I went dancing at the Trades and Labour Club on Beverley Road, Hull. One night Shellmex was bombed and as we were dancing the roof fell in. There was glass and debris around us all. My friend and I had crawled under our seats, so did everyone else! Throughout all of this the band played on! The Band Leader then announced, in a truly English spirit, that we should all keep on dancing.
My friend Violet wanted to go home to Spring Street to make sure her mother was safe and well. Consequently we started to walk home through all the devastation. When we arrived at Spring Street it was cordoned off. My friend was, understandably, very upset. Eventually we were allowed to go through. When we reached her home all the windows had been blown out. She took in lodgers as well as having her own family live there and all their faces were black from the soot which came down the chimneys. The house was just opposite Shellmex, which had been bombed. In the midst of this disaster it was quite funny to look at all the blacked out dirty faces.
