We were transported by train and lodged in two hotels named the Berkley and Monterey, in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Here, we enjoyed rest and relaxation but very little money as I had lost all my pay gambling on the Crown and Anchor board organised by the wide boys. (I have neveer gambled since). When the next payday arrived we visited New York. Thanks to the generosity of the USO, the cinemas and theatres, food and entertainment were free. We even spent Christmas with a family who had earlier emigrated from England.

Soon after this, the train journey to Vancouver Island was also an unforgettable experience, especially going very slowly over the Rocky Mountains where I was able to quickly jump to ground and grab a piece of the mountain and get back aboard the train. We joined the HMS Premier, the 10,000 ton welded Kaiser-built aircraft carrier. I stress "welded" as ships are normall strengthened by rivets. One such ship reached Scapa Flow in Scotland and then broke in half!
