My father was in the ARP during the war. One night he was on duty at a local school when an incendiary bomb dropped in the playground. It did not go off. My father (without turning round) shouted "give me a bucket of sand!"
He grabbed the bucket and threw the contents on the bomb - It was water! The bomb 'wooshed' up and my father was thrown to the ground but was otherwise unhurt - A lucky escape.
