This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Deena Campbell from CSV Action Desk on behalf of Bryan Palser and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Palser fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

My father was in the ARP during the war. One night he was on duty at a local school when an incendiary bomb dropped in the playground. It did not go off. My father (without turning round) shouted "give me a bucket of sand!"

He grabbed the bucket and threw the contents on the bomb - It was water! The bomb 'wooshed' up and my father was thrown to the ground but was otherwise unhurt - A lucky escape.
