In 1940 when I was five, on a Saturday night, coming home from Gran鈥檚, on the last bus, the siren went and the bus stopped and we all went into the air raid shelter.
I鈥檇 just got a lovely doll dressed all in yellow for a birthday present and in the rush I lost one of the bootees. I was devastated!
At my other Grandma鈥檚, rushing into a bigger shelter, I was fascinated to see all the old ladies, in shawls, had brought jugs of beer and everyone was happily singing 鈥淚t鈥檚 a long way to Tipperary鈥 and all the old songs. Everyone stuck together.
