I was 14 when war broke out. I remember I was in Church, on a Sunday morning and the vicar announced the start of the war, I remember that very distinctly.
I had just left school and I was working at Kays in Worcester. I was a clerk and there were lots of women there who left for the army. As I was handy with figures I went on to do the books.
In 1944, I remember the date because it was the 4/4/44 - I was sent to work in the war office in droitwich as a clerk. I worked there until the war ended.
The library in droitwich used to be the cinema. I was there with a friend one day and after the film her brother was suppossed to come and meet us. Well when we came out we met up with two American soldiers and they got us chatting and invited us for a drink at the Raven. My friend's brother got fed up with waiting for us and went home and told his mom what we were up to. She went down the the road to my mom's and told her.
My mom came marching down to the Raven and opened the door. She stood in the open doorway and just stared at me. She crooked her index finger at me and just said 'OUT'. Well I had to just stand up and walk out. I was so embarrassed, and that was the end of that! My mom really gave it to me on the way home i can tell you!
