This story was submitted to the People's War site by CSV/大象传媒 Radio Nottingham on behalf of David Bullwright with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I travelled all over with the air force, from Iceland to Egypt, during the war. I fought in the Battle of Alamaine which was a major turning point of the war. It is impossible to convey the high level of noise on the battlefield. It was very hard for us to acclimatise to the different environments. For four years I only slept in trenches. Officers and Privates had the same watered down food. British soldiers did not have very much during the war. We received four and sixpence a week. Although the American soldiers had more than us, they were generous and we got on well. We did not tend to get on well with the French.
