It was a month before my 10th birthday when we heard that the atom bomb had been dropped on Japan .
I was worried sick ,as my father ,who had survived the evacuation of Dunkirk ,had been captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore.
Not knowing where he was imprisoned ,I was terrified that he might have been killed by the bomb.We didn't feel much like celebrating.
It was later that we heard that he had died of Malaria and beri-beri in June of that year ,in a POW camp in Borneo.
His name is on the Kranji War Memorial in Singapore but he has no known grave.
I often wonder if there were any survivors at all from that camp.
