I was a sergeant in the 184 Field Amb in the 46th division with American 5th army. We landed at midnight on the 8/9 Sept 1943. It was touch and go as to us remaining on the beach. We had many casualities to deal with I think we were on the beach about 10 days.
We eventually was able to make our way up from Salerno and got invoved in the battle for Cassino. Our job was the carrying patiants down the nearby mountains. in relays to the ambulances several hours later, we also had the assistance of some mules, with casualities strapped on to their backs. they were wonderful beasts, oblivious to shell fire.
