During the prolonged Blitz on London, we had got used to spending every night in the Anderson Shelter at the bottom of the garden.
However, one night our routine was changed by the appearance of ARP Wardens blowing their whistles and telling everyone to go to the Brewery Tap pub at the bottom of the road, and go down into their large cellar. The reason for this was that someone at the top of the road had reported an unexploded bomb in their front garden.
The cellar was pretty crowded and stuffy, and without any proper toilet facilities, so the experience was not particularly pleasant once the novelty had worn off. Once daylight came, the Bomb Squad discovered the the 'bomb' was nothing more than a half buried dogs bone! So, grumbling and moaning, we all went off home.
