Iron railings were removed from schools and public buildings during the war but I understand that the government didn't always put them to much use. At Carnyorth School we had one decent football and I remember another chap and I were kicking the football forth and back in the playground. I was supposed to be in goal! As the railings had been taken down the wall was quite low and the football went over the wall and under the wheels of Patersons lorry. Carnyorth School didn't get another football for the duration of the war and we had to resort to cricket on Carnyorth Moor after that.
