I was in East Acton, W12 in London aged 9 or 10 when we left our parents in London. Myself, my older sister and younger brother were evacuated by train. We had gas masks in cardboard boxes tied round our necks with pieces of string and name labels on us.
When we got to West town, we were bundled into a big hall where we were picked out by who wanted to look after us.
This woman had just got married and took 3 boys in with her.
My sister and me stayed together and were taken in by a mother and daughter - I still keep in contact with the daughter now. My brother went elsewhere. We were frightened because we were staying right by the aerodrome. We stayed there for about 4 years and returned to London in time for the Doodlebug. Our Anderson shelter in the garden that was half underground was bombed so it was very unsafe and scary.
