The school grapevine threw up some interestng items from time to time.Another pupil arrived one morning and said "There's a German aircraft in the cattle market". Being curious, after school I went to have a look. Sure enough there was a Messerschmit 109E parked near one of the entrances. It looked in peculiarly good condition to me; I could only find a few holes in it in what appeared to be non threatening positions, and my memory recalls the Luftwaffe markings,a pink nose cone, and the curious smell of the aluminium alloy of which it was constructed. The cockpit was open. so I climbed in and found that the pilot's seat was like a large tin tray; I presume he sat on his parachute. In later years it occured to me that the position of the red gun button on the control column would present some problems for a left-handed pilot. Perhaps all ME pilots were right handed.
