My grandfather worked in Malta which was heavily bombed during the war because it was surrounded by German occupied land. He worked in the signals regiment. One day when the bomber planes came across the officer told all the people to go into the basement of a nearby house. This wasn鈥檛 allowed but they went in for safety. The house was bombed. The house fell down and they were trapped in the basement. The officer felt responsible and broke down. My grandfather took charge and started telling people to call out and to try and clear the rubble. After 3 days with no food or water they were found and rescued.
