During the Blita, the sirens used to go most nights about 6pm, before this time I was usually packed off to some friends of my parents who lived further down the road. They had a daughter who was about 5 years older than I was and her parents made up a couple of mattresses under their stairs for us to sleep on. Her parents always asked me to go under the stairs first, this proved very embarassing because every time I heard the sound of a plane or bombs being dropped I wanted to go to the toilet which was upstairs - so much for being protected. The reason why I had to stay with these friends was that my father was on warden duty and my mother was a nurse at Epsom Hospital. I did not see much of my parents during this period.
As boys we used to collect shrapnel and use it for swaps.
