The first time I ever recall seeing my father makes me squirm with embarressment. He was away fighting and some nights I was allowed to sleep in my mothers bed. He arrived home on leave late one night unexectedly and, not surprisngly,my mother yanked me out of her bed and put me in my own. I can still clearly picture my fathers tired and bewildered face as he saw his son screaming with rage at him. I have often wondered how many other reunions or first time meetings between father and son were causes of tears and distress. It is easy to forget that one parent families were the norm during the war.
