My Father was in a reserved occupation
during WW2 ,and lived and worked in New Milton and Sway as a Cowman.
I was born in 1940,and had two brothers. We lived in a farm cottage, and life was pretty basic I guess..
My Dad joined the Home Guard, and my
abiding memory of this was my envy at
him always taking egg sandwiches when he went on duty.! ( I was about 3yrs old at this time).
In later years he told us that he used to patrol the cliffs at Highcliffe with a pitchfork ! There were many scare stories about the enemy invading and he always said that he didnt know which one of them would have run fastest in the opposite direction!!
I've never known any personal details of his Battalion etc. but if anyone has any memories of my late Father, Ted Ayriss, I would love to hear from them.
Oh yes...that army greatcoat lasted for many years as an eiderdown!!!!!
