First World War involved women for the first time in industry and traditional male areas During the War my mother,Olivia, volunteered to drive a van to take Cheddar Cheese to the army camps and she said there were very few cars on the roads because only doctors and one or two other people in essential work were allowed petrol. Olivia also contributed to the war effort by joining the local volunteer Women鈥檚 Land Army. She used to say there is hardly anything so wonderful as cooking bacon for breakfast over an open fire out in the fields in the early morning. These women worked very hard for the War Effort and established some records such as digging tons of vegetables and planting acres of potatoes.
