My Great Uncle William (Billy) Coulthard and his best mate was one of the last men to leave Dunkirk Beach. He had dug himself in and when the german's arrived he was still there. A German was stood over the top where he was hiding.

When they escaped they had to swim, under fire, for a boat.

In the 1980's, he was awarded 3 Military Honors, however he did not go to recieve them as he believed that there was better men than him killed who got nothing. He didn't think he had done anything exceptional.
