My story is of World War Two in Bournemouth beside the sea on the South Coast of Britain. Actually the nearest point of our country to where the hostilities were taken place just across the Channel. At times we could clearly hear the guns roaring on the continent.
The earliest indication I recall of trouble was the black out in 1939 when I was six years of age. Black out it was too. There was to be no shred of light escaping from the windows of houses and the vehihcles left in use after petrol rationing came was enforced had their headlights covered.Only a pin hole of light was emited to drive by. Our buses were fitted with strange violet coloured lihts internally. These
restrictions on illumination lasted throughout the period.

Message 1 - AT WAR IN BOURNEMOUTH

Posted on: 25 February 2004 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Dear WILSONB

I had quite forgotten about the "strange violet coloured lights internally" in buses and trams in 1939 and early 1940, before I left the UK. Your contribution brought it all back to me.

Kind regards,

Peter
