Dad served in the Royal Navy in the war. Mum met Dad during the war. They married in 1945. When they were going out on a date, Mum would do her legs with gravy browning and get her sister Beryl to draw a pencil line down the back of her leg to make it look like a stocking seam. She used to be paranoid about the line being straight!
Grandad kept chickens and rabbits. He'd kill them and get them ready for nan to cook. He had a huge back garden and he grew everything. They even had fruit trees. Nothing was wasted. Nan would make jams, pies.
Nan was a wonderful knitter. She made skirts, jumpers, all sorts. During the war she'd unravel the old jumpers and knit up new ones.
My mum has told me about queuing for everything. She was always a smoker. During the war there was a brand called something like 'Pasha'. She said they were vile but she still smoked them. There was nothing else. The other thing she really hated was dried egg.
