This is one of Herbert Whittaker's stories as told to his daughter Kathleen Pounder.
My dad was in the East Lancs Regiment and was stranded, like so many others, at Dunkirk. But that is where the similarity ends, not for my dad the horrors of being bombed on the beach, well we never heard about them anyway.
No lucky old Herbert was picked up by a bloody great cruise ship!
Always a one with an eye on the main chance he saw an opportunity just waiting to be taken advantage of.
To pass the time away he organised a game of bingo with the profits going to his favourite charity, well some of them.
He sent 拢20.00 home as a reminder that he was alive and doing very well thank you and thinking of them.
