One Sunday afternoon a German aircraft was shot down and crashed in the grounds of the Belmont Castle that was just out side of Grays. As boys will be boys we all went up the next day to have a look. The airmen were all killed and we saw the blood etc. still splattered about. One of the airmen was found dead up among the trees. The airforce and army carried away the engines from the plane. We were told that the man who aimed at and shot the plane down was put on charge for not waiting for the order to fire. The weather was overcast and misty with rain.
