I joined the Wrens in April 1943 to be trained as a Wireless Telegraphist. Training, in London, was from April until October 1943. I was then posted to the underground wireless station in Scarborough where I remained until March 1946. Here my job was to sit at a radio set taking down the morse messages from German frequencies. Sometimes we were there all night and always keenly listening for a _..._ message from a U-boat!! If we did hear one, it would be immediately transferred to Civil Servants who took a bearing position on it. Ready for action I presume!!
It wasn't until after the war that I realised that all our code messages had been sent to Bletchley Park as everything was shrouded in secrecy at the time. I have to say though, that in all my time there, I never heard a U Boat transmission. For obvious reasons, they very rarely sent messages and I think there were only 2 or 3 whilst I was at Scarborough.
