It had been a very rough tour, well trained and able nobody had warned us that the politics were going to be more important than our lives. Trained to basically fight spetznatz in a European theatre, then re-trained to fight terrorists who spoke our language and were part of the UK.
Threatened with prosecution if we retaliated against the petrol bombs and snipers, not suprisingly we lost men.
Still our scarifice was keeping the worst of the bombings from mainland Britain, at least "people at home" were able to live normal lives.
Home for a few days leave visted an old friend, who knew the score (he had been there) and could cope with my shaking hands and propensity to hit the ground if a car backfired.
Two pints please,-We are not serving soldiers - first pub.
May I buy you a drink - Only slappers talk to soldiers - second pub.
I went back from RandR early, at leat my brick wanted me.
Silly really - still I do get 拢2000.00 per annum war pension to make up for spending all day every day in pain now - injuries received Active Service Ulster. (yes that was 2000 not 20,000 - rates are based on a 1st world war calculation for NCO's such as myself).
I have typed this here as once again it is nearly remembrance day. Once again I hear "remember the dead and injured of 2 world wars" with NI conveniantly forgotten.
