Although we were not living in the centre of Manchester, it was a horrible experience. We could hear the planes going over our house and wondered if one would fall on us.
I worked in Hyde from the age of 14 years. A bomb fell on a row of houses during the night. We went to look during our lunch hour. The houses were down to the ground. I collected a piece of shrapnel, which I kept.
