My father was a plumber and, when the Dutch army came to Congleton, he worked on the conversions of the empty mills into barracks for them. He became quite friendly with some of the Dutchmen and invited them to our home. They, together with my father and uncle, set up targets to practise their shooting skills. On at least one occasion, they joined the family for tea — some kind of sandwiched and (probably) salad. I was fascinated that they ate the sandwiches with a knife and fork!
