Mum told us of travelling to work from Montrose to Dundee in 1945. To her shock and surprise as they passed close to the River Tay estuary she saw the unmistakeable shapes of a group of German U boats. It must have been very close to the end of the war, although whether it was before Churchill's speech I cannot be sure. Of course, U boats were a chilling thought after all they had done and it took a little time to realise they were surrendering to the nearest port.

Message 1 - U Boats at Dundee

Posted on: 08 May 2005 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Mary -
your mother should have been in Dundee early in the war - it might have been the back end of September '39 when two submarines were tied up at the East Docks and the crews were marched through to the Drill Hall- for some reason or other .
As they marched it was noticed that their cap bands were written in what was thought to be the German language and so they were heartily booed for most of the march.
The next day the Dundee Courier
and Advertiser lashed into the citizens as - in fact - the two submarines were the Polish "Orzel' and 'Wilk' which had escaped Poland and made their way to Dundee.
needless to say - the Dundee people fell all over themselves in apologies and certainly made up for their error !
regards
