Bombing was frightening for the Barrow people and a lot of people had to leave their homes and families. Rosina was evacuated looking after little children. Vera got called up to work in Vickers as a tack welder.

As the bombing got heavy more children were sent away. Parts of Barrow were blown apart by the bombing because the Germans were looking for the shipyard.

Everyone had a ration book and although food was scarce and some weeks there were no eggs to be bought, no one really went hungry.
