My great grandparents were living in Turvey in Bedford with two little girls (their daughters) Pauline and Hannah.
It is war time and my great granda was a soldier, there were no sweets or fruit and food was only available with a ration book with coopons in it that were cut out when you wanted to buy something. You were only allowed so much each week.
it was a very nerve racking time for all with aircraft flying over head, there had to be no lights shining through windows so the windows were covered with blackouts. these were blinds made from black material or thick black paper on a wooden frame.
one night as the aircraft was flying over head a large whistle could be heard, this was a bomb coming down behind the house that great gandma and granda lived in. It was said to ba approximately 100 yards up the field.
the pilot of an enemy aircraft saw the mon shining in a pond in the field and thought it was a building with light showing through the windows.
it made a big hole in the field and a nasty smell of sulphur.
shortly after a corporal on a motor bike came for my great granda and took him back on duty.
The family were left with gas masks to help keep them safe. a balloon type that stood on the floor for the baby (Hannah) and she could be put in completely and zipped up. A black one with a plastic visa for great grandma to pull over her head and a micky mouse one for my grandma (pauline) aged three to four years.
These were carried in a box over your shoulder and had to stay with you all the time.
After the war the family moved up North to Gilcrux and the on to Aikton where great granda and grandma took in a refugee from London called Douglas Taverner. He went home when the war ended.
