When war broke out I was 11 yrs old.athis particular night we were woken up by Mother calling "Air Raid" I quickly put on a siren suit and rushed downsatairs with my brother. We had to go out into the shelter in the garden one of us got the cat the other the dog and Mum got the bird. Dad had packed as always sandwiches and flasks in case we were there some time. Dad was in the A.R.P so he had to leave us he did keep calling back to make sure we werea all ok as the depot was only at the school just down the road.
This particular night was terryfying bombs were dropping all around and everywhere was desimated.
Mrs Wilds house which was next door to us was set on fire and they lost most of their posessions that night. However when the morning came we found out that the German Air Force had gone the wrong way and we had got the brunt of the bombings and the steel part of the city went unscathed. As usual we banded together and put up Mr and Mrs Wild and their son and daughter.Everybody pulled together in the war and its this comraidship that I remember the most.
