As I went to work at Lilley and Skinner, Pentonville Road, it wasn't to type but instead to clear up the broken windows on the 6th floor. A bomb had hit the building opposite and caused the windows to break.
It was lunchtime and as I was approaching the canteen, a Doodle Bug was very close and noisy.
A member of staff came running into the canteen stating it had come down around where I lived. I ran out of the building and ran and ran. My friend Dot also ran along with me. That was until an ambulance, bells ringing, came down York Way. I accelerated and left her behind.
As I turned into a street that backed onto my street I could see flames and smoke. When I got to the top of my street surprisingly it had already been cordoned off and I had to struggle with the G.I.'s to let me through. Then someone called out "Let her through as she lives down here".
The scene at the top of the street was awful, then someone grabbed me and said "Your mum's ok, she's in the shelter with your niece" - just a baby.
That day in my life is still so memorable it could have happened just a couple of years ago.
