I was only three when the war started so i was too young to go away with the school. Initially i went away with my mother but we kept returning home.
During one period at home i was in the back garden and a German plane came flying low overhead. The pilot waved at me and a few seconds later he dropped a bomb on the local school. It was lunch time but it hit the dining hall. 30 children and 2 teachers were killed. Later in the day someone who was looking after me picked me up so that i could look over the fence to look at the bombed school. The rescue operation was still going on. Mum was not happy when she found out!
Although i cannot remember the exact date of the incident, records of it can be found and photos found in books in Lewisham Local archives.
