"I was called up to join the ATS in December 1942 and there I was, a little forlorn creature on Temple Meads Station, Bristol, with my attache case, waiting for a train to take me to Wrexham. It was snowing.
At Wrexham our billets were Nissan huts and we had to walk through the snow to our ablutions. After a period of 6 weeks I went down to Surrey on a course to train for Field and Mess Cooking. That was a very enjoyable time.
Then came the day when we received our postings - mine to Larkhill Camp on Salisbury Plain. Oh what a place ! When I saw that long winding road, a scene I shall never forget, my eyes filled with tears and I wondered if I would ever get out.
Needless to say I quickly settled into the life with all the other girls. We were billeted in Sandhurst Block and one day we had to make sandwiches for the soldiers for 'D' day.
It was a great pleasure for me that I could walk up to the Stores away from the hot stoves and sit there with a book completely alone."
