One thing I distinctly remember: my Mother used to go to fetch my Father a beer in a jug because we had what was called an ‘outdoor beer-license’ over the road and of course in the black-out, you had to take a torch.

Whenever anyone saw you with a torch they’d shout ‘put that light out!’ So my Mother used to go over the road very carefully with her torch, and fetch the pint of beer.
