[This story was submitted to the People’s War website by a volunteer from ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Cambridgeshire on behalf of Jack Beckett and has been added to the site with their permission. Mr Beckett fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.]

I was in Transport Company, taking supplies to troops in the New Forest. On D-Day I remember taking troops into Southampton docks. I was 18 years old. Greengrocers brought crates of apples and left them at the docks to give to the soldiers. The last lot of troops I transported were the French /Canadians.

I also remember seeing the first ‘frog suits’ being used by both the army and navy as they practised blowing up underwater obstacles in preparation for D-Day.

About three weeks later, I drove The Crazy Gang to the docks in the back of an open lorry. They were going over to entertain the troops.

For VE Day I was in Tel Aviv and then Damascus on VJ Day.
