Bill in 1945
Whilst moored in Tokyo Bay a very unusual and exiting story unfolded.I remember the date as being 28th August 1945.An American Patrol Boat pulled alongside the 'Duke of York'
Two lads came on board and spotted me.One of them said "Bloody Hell how did you get here so quick?"I was confused till I heard their incredible story.I said,"Sorry lads I have no idea what your talking about".One lad said "Last time we saw you was back at the camp".It was then I realised they were talking about my brother, who I had not seen or heard of for ages,I didn't know whether he was alive or dead. They assured me that he was alive and as well as could be expected having spoken to him only yesterday.
They then told their own incredible story. They had managed to slip their guards and escape from the camp they had been held in.They managed to cover thirty miles when they came to a beach which they thought was swarming with Japanese troops. It was only when they noticed an empty packet of Chesterfield cigarettes and a rapper of Nestles chocolate, floating in the river did they realise these were American troops. They made contact and were picked up and transferred to the 'Duke of York'.The lads introduced themselves as Edgar Campbell of the RASC and Marine John Lynn.
