During the war I was made to work for the police force in London. One night, I was having dinner and was approached by a couple of colleagues who, knowing that I was from Shropshire asked me if I had ever seen an egg! Quite taken aback by this I of course said yes, and proceeded to tell them that I had also seen chickens, which lay the eggs. The policemen were from London, and like most city folk of the time had no experience of country life. They then asked me if when I went on leave back to Shropshire I could bring them back some eggs. After explaining that they were hard to come by I explained that I would try my best, knowing full well that my aunty in Churchstoke-who I stayed with whilst on leave actually kept chickens. Fortunately for the London police force I managed to scrounge some off her and on my return they caused much amusement among my workmates and were like goldust when trying to bargain for items which were difficult to get hold of during the time. I was heralded a hero!
Now,if you can imagine the excitement these eggs caused caused you should have seen the men's reaction when I tried to explain to them how the eggs came from the chicken!

Message 1 - Have you ever seen an egg?

Posted on: 04 October 2005 by Peter - WW2 Site Helper

Dear Jim

I can only assume that your two colleagues and the rest of the police station were having a laugh at your expense and you fell for it.

I was at school in Leeds before the war and rarely went to the countryside, trips to seaside being far more popular, but I certainly knew what an egg was and that birds laid eggs. A lightly boiled egg with buttered soldiers was a very common breakfast and grocery shop windows displaying eggs a common sight.

If it had become known that any kid in the two inner-city schools I went to didn't know what an egg was, that kid's life would have been made an utter misery. He would have become a complete laughing stock and figure of fun for the whole school.

Regards,

Peter Ghiringhelli
