My parents were asked if they would be prepared to take an evacuee which they agreed to do. Sometime after this, Pat Martin arrived from London. She was a fair haired girl and from memory she was a similar age to me. She attended the same school as me and being a girl she made friends with other girls at school rather than with me and my friends. It was good to have her in our house as my brother and sisters were a lot older than me. I felt glad that I hadn’t been evacuated and I wanted to be kind and welcoming towards her. My sister, Peg, was very helpful in that she took Pat out and entertained her in her own home. Pat’s mother used to come down to see her from time to time which was nice for all of us. She was very well behaved and I can’t remember any difficulties whatsoever. She fitted in very well with the family. I can’t remember her getting too upset at any time, which on reflection now is amazing. I hope she looks back on her time with us with fond memories. Peg kept in touch with her amd her mother after the war as we felt she had become part of our family.
