We were living in Stepney in the centre of London. It was during the proper blitz '40 to '41. I was about five then.

We used to sleep in the passage way which was considered to be the sfaest place with a mattress on top and below.

I remember it was so hot and heavy. I used to try and push it off and lie on my side to get my face in the air. I hated it.
