Brenda's ID card.
I was a child aged 5 when the war broke out. I was living with both of my parents in Cottingham. My mother was a housewife and my father was in the fire service. My grandparents lived in Hull and they took refuge in the underground air raid shelter at Reckitt and Coleman during the raid. Bombs frequently hit Hull and I can picture the fires and the droning noise of the Doodlebug bombs. Thankfully none of my family was hurt during the raids.
Our family's Anderson air raid shelter was at the bottom of the garden. It was really cosy and my father made bunk beds for us. our neighbours, mrs Hodgeson and her son, Gerald, used to come into our shelter to keep us company. We had to go there most nights. If the sirens went off before midnight you had to go to school the next day. however if it was after midnight, you were excused from school.
My mother and I were visiting my father in Bridlington whilst he was working at the fire station, and we were walking along the promenade back towards our lodgings, when a German plane slowly followed us as we walked. All the beach was barb-wired off. I was not frightened of the plane as I was only 5 but my mother was worried sick.
