Can anyone remember The Air Raid Wardens in the Exeter Blitz?
My grandfather was one. My mother was 40 years older than me and she recounted stories of my grandfather being straffed by a Heinkel bomber on a raid over Exeter.
She also told me of the time my grandfather would wear his gas mask and come home after duty. The sweat would gather in the bottom through sheer exhaustion.
Also there was a delayed action bomb at the end of their street. My mother and family had to move out of the street.
I always remember a sticking door in my grandfathers house as a child. He never had the door repaired and it had been that was like that since a bomb had gone off during the blitz.
It would like be good to learn about my grandfather and of others who whose families were Air Raid Wardens during the 1942 blitz of our city.
