My father was taken prisoner by the Japenese when they took over Singapore.
He was imprisoned for three years until the end of the war and initially my mother who was living in India did not know whether he was dead or alive so she returned to N Ireland.
I still have postcards sent from the camp and in them my father seemed cheerful. He never did tell us any of the horrific details that everyone now knows about, but occassionally related amusing stories!
Ronald Searle the cartonist was also in the camp and I have two coloured cartoons that he drew there.
Apparantly when my father returned after the war, of course he was very thin, but he also ate very quickly and this continued for the rest of his life!
He was always a regular church goer and I think perhaps this was because he was so grateful that he had survived the awful ordeal.
Unfortunately he died in 1988 aged 79, and I miss him greatly.
