My name is Joyce Frearson , I was born on 5th November, 1939. My Dad, George Darley was 'called up' shortley afterwards, and joined the Army regiment Yorks and Lancs.
He was taken prisoner on Crete, and spent the rest of the war in several P.O.W. camps. Stalag III D, being one of them. Also Berlin and Dresden. After the bombing of Dresden he and fellow P.O.W's helped "clean up"! (After his death I read the book, "DREZDEN"). He came home when I was six years old, in 1945. He had been on the long route march from South to North Germany, spending time in an American camp where he was fed carefully, special food because he was so weak from lack of food for so long.
I was playing out on my three wheeler bike the day he came marching home. We knew he was coming, but not sure what time. No telephones then. There were trees all around the square on the estate where I lived, with my mother, grandmother and aunt. The neighbours had strung bunting and flags from tree to tree and kept telling me it was to welcome my dad, he was coming home. Until then I had had two dads, one on the fireshelf in a photo frame and one in Germany. Now it was for real.
