One day in the middle of the war whilst I was at St.John鈥檚, Junior School, Penge, two or three (I can not remember just how many) German fighter planes flew at rooftop level and shot several people in Penge High St., they flew round past our School where we were in the hall having 鈥楧inner鈥, so close that we could distinctly see the Pilots. We children were both terrified and amazed, some started crying, so to cheer us up our wonderful Cook , who was as round as she was tall, stood up on the stage and started singing 鈥淭here鈥檒l always be an England鈥, and very quickly had we children joining in to take away our fear. 鈥 I can still see that Cook to this day. Fortunately no children were injured.
