I have two very powerful memories, the first on D Day 6th June 1944,I remember seeing the hundreds of aircraft and gliders flying over our school playground, the old Senior School they called it then, all us boys(I was eleven)were very excited and wanted to stay outside and watch this great modern armada, history in the making we told our teachers, but school work had to go on.My next powerful memory was the next day seeing the Red Cross ambulance trains slowly pulling up the line from Southampton and into Andover Junction for onward transportation to many hospitals in the South, there were hundreds of wounded soldiers on those trains and in my mind's eye I can see them to this day.The Junction staff wouldn't let us boys on to the platforms, but we managed to by various means. My mother was allowed on and she helped dish out cups of tea and sandwiches to the injured troops.I shall never forget those sad days.If anyone else remembers this time please get in touch for a good old chinwag.
